KL Marathon Aims To Attract 18,000 Runners This Year
KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama)-- The organisers and sponsors of the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon on June 27 are hoping to attract about 18,000 runners for this year's edition that offers total prize of US$100,000 (RM341,000).
Standard Chartered's chief executive officer, Osman Morad said the number of participants is expected to be more than the inaugural edition last year that saw about 12,000 participants."
As the marathon runs into its second year, we look towards growing the marathon to the next level," he told a press conference after the official launch by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.Earlier, Ahmad Shabery said in his speech that the event was in line with the ministry's vision in developing a healthy and energetic community.
"Running, as one of the most basic form of athletics and sports in general, is an accessible sport for all to enjoy as participant to the world-class international race such as KL Marathon can testify," he said.
The marathon is backed by the Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union, Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
The marathon offers seven categories, namely, full marathon (open and veteran categories), half marathon (open and veteran), 10km (men's and women's), 10km corporate challenge, 5km (Fun Run and Family Run) and kids dash (3km and 850m).
